About Dr. Shaleen Agarwal

Dr. Shaleen Agarwal is a Senior Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgeon currently based in New Delhi India. He is a surgical director at Centre for Liver and Biliary Sciences, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi.

Dr. Shaleen Agarwal has graduated from the Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, Varanasi, India in 1995. This was followed by general surgery residency from the same institution.

Dr. Shaleen Agarwal then proceeded for Super Speciality training in the field of Gastrointestinal surgery & obtained MCh (GI surgery) degree from Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, India in 2005.

Thereafter, he did a 2-year fellowship in Solid Organ Transplant from University of Rochester, NY, USA and obtained certification from the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) in 2011.

  • Acute liver failure

    This is a rare syndrome in which hepatic function rapid declines and comes with the characteristics of coagulopathy, jaundice and hepatic encephalopathy in patients. In Acute Liver Failure, there will not be any evidence of liver disease before and coagulopathy will be INR>1.5. It affects mostly the young people and has high mortality rate.

  • Cirrhosis and Chronic liver disease

    When the healthy cells in the liver are damaged Cirrhosis and Chronic Liver Disease occurs. These healthy cells are replaced by scar tissue. Alcohol consumption and chronic hepatitis are the reason for this disease. Hence, the liver does not function properly and results in liver failure and mostly results in the death of the patient.

  • Liver cancer

    The liver performs various important duties in our body. It is a football sized organ found between the diaphragm and stomach. Though there are several types of liver cancer are found, the common one being the hepatocellular carcinoma which is found in the liver itself (hepatocyte). Some less common types of liver cancers are hepatoblastoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

  • Cancers of gall bladder and bile ducts

    Cancer of gall bladder is most common in people aged above 70. It is a malignancy often seen in the gall bladder. The rate of gall bladder is high in the case of women.
    Cancer of bile ducts otherwise called as Cholangiocarcinoma is found in bile ducts that found either inside or outside the liver.

  • Non-cancerous liver tumors

    Benign or Non-cancerous liver tumors are very common and they normally do not spread to other areas of the liver or any other organ. The risk factor involved is also low. These are normally not detected unless some medical imaging tests are done i.e. CT test, ultrasound and MRI. Some of the common types of liver tumors are hemangiomas, hepatocellular adenomas and hyperplasis. Very rarely it requires treatment.

  • Cancer of the pancreas

    A gland found behind the stomach is called as pancreas which helps in the digestion as well as for the regulation of the blood sugar. Cancer of the Pancreas is the growth and division of abnormal cells in an uncontrolled manner. Generally symptoms not appear in early stages. Later stages are associated with few symptoms like lack of appetite and weight loss.

  • Chronic pancreatitis

    The inflammation of the pancreas which does not improve or heal over the period is called as Chronic Pancreatitis. Normally, it damages the pancreas permanently. Hence, pancreatic hormones cannot be produced. Eventually, people cannot digest food. It is often found in men than in women in the age group of 30-40.

  • Cystic tumors of the pancreas

    Now-a-days, we have many diagnostic imaging which is helpful in detecting the same. Mostly they are non-neoplastic that causes pancreatic cyst and it ranges from benign to malignant tumors.
